Back in February we spoke to you about the new legislation that had come into force regarding battery recycling. To sum up, the UK has been given the target of increasing battery recycling to 10% by the end of this year and by 25% by 2012.
Since the new legislation came into effect, you should have seen many more battery recycling bins popping up all over the place. Shops and supermarkets like Tesco and Asda are now required by law to provide a recycling service and they’re doing this via BatteryBack.
The law says that if you are responsible for selling 32kg of batteries in a year, then you must provide recycling bins. But just because you don’t sell batteries it doesn’t mean you can’t provide a battery recycling bin. In fact, that’s exactly what the people at BatteryBack want to get across.
The problem with a lot of recycling is that many people don’t know where to take their recyclables. We’ve already seen BatteryBack’s bins in our local Post Offices, but if your work place goes through a lot of AAs then why not apply for a bin yourself? Or how about getting one for your school or college? The more places you see these bins, the more likely you are to use them.
BatteryBack make things really easy for you too. All you need to do is go to their website and fill out the form. You can choose what size bin you want and they’ll do the rest. They even arrange for collection. So never mind if the law is making you provide a battery recycling service or not, let’s just get those bins in as many places as we can.
25% of batteries being recycled by 2012? Let’s double it.
