If you’ve ever hired a skip, you’ve probably noticed that it seems to fill up faster than you thought it would. This is usually down to neighbours from near and far dumping their own rubbish in your skip. It’s frustrating and annoying.
The problem arises because people have large items that need getting rid of. But not everyone has the means of getting to the local dump and hiring a skip, or even a man with a van, is a bit expensive for one or two items.
With that in mind many communities have come up with a solution. Skip Day. A day when one or two large skips are provided for communal use.
If you fancy organising a Skip Day for your neighbourhood there are a few things you need to think about:
How big is your community?
This will help you determine how many skips you’ll need. If you live on a long street, don’t think you can get away with only including houses up to a certain number. This could cause neighbourhood disputes. Include everyone.
Where will the skips go?
Think about the people who live at the far ends of the community too. They won’t thank you if they have to walk any distance with arms full of rubbish. Oh, and remember, if cars need to be moved to accomodate the skips, make sure everyone knows in advance.
Which day would best suit everyone?
Remember, not everybody works the same hours, so try to be accommodating.
How much will it cost?
Your friendly neighbourhood skip yard will provide a price for you. They’ll also help you to work out how may skips you’ll need and of which size.
How keen is the neighbourhood?
You’ll have to start kncking on doors for this one. Let everyone know what you’re planning, get their feedback and explain how you’re going to divide the price up.
Skip Days are a great way of having a clear out and who knows, you might even make some new friends in your community. So what are you waiting for?
