Waste to Energy
At Cherry Hill Waste, we like to do our bit for the environment. That’s why we’ve managed to recycle 90% of all the waste that comes to us. Can we get that figure to 100%? We think we can.
One of the things we’ve embraced is the idea of refusing, as far as possible, to send waste to landfill. This works fine for rubble and soil, what is termed Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, but doesn’t work so well for things like waste wood.
However, waste wood does have other uses.
Energy from Waste
Waste Wood is defined as either green waste (cut from trees or shrubs during landscaping) or is just plain old waste wood (railway sleepers, broken pallets, construction waste) and that affects its reuse.
Green Waste can be easily composted, whereas some other wood waste cannot. Burning would be the obvious method of disposal, but it’s very wasteful and polluting.
A better way is to convert this kind of waste into biogas. It’s a completely safe way of reusing waste wood and other combustible material in a very efficient manner.
Heating your waste materials to very high temperatures, while regulating the amount of air, causes them to release their gasses without combusting. The gas that is given off is scrubbed clean and can be used to power generators that provide electricity and hot water. All that is left is an inert ash which can be used as a component in the production of cement.
As society urges us to move away from fossil fuels, biogas may turn out to be a great alternative.
