Recycling is essential to help protect the environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and preserve natural resources. Many of us are becoming more aware of good recycling practices and making an effort to increase how much we recycle.
It’s likely that you’ll be familiar with recycling equipment like composting bins, bottle banks and separate containers for different materials, but there’s a whole range of machinery that’s needed for recycling to be effective. Specialised recycling machinery and equipment is needed to separate the materials, process them safely and maximise how much material can be reused. From shredders to dumpers, crushers and pulpers, see below to find out more about some of the most common recycling machinery.
Shredders
Shredders are an essential part of the compacting process, and break down material so that it can be easily transported. Shredders are suitable for use with a wide number of materials, including paper, wood and even electronics.
Crushers
Crushers also work to compact material and are often used with glass, plastic and cans. They’re often powered by pneumatic cylinder systems which run on compressed gas; this makes them highly powerful and they can crush at a rate of one can per second.
Sorters
Also called separators, these machines use magnets to sort and separate metal recycling from other types of waste. They also use liquid traps and filters to further separate different types of recycling for easier processing later.
Pulpers
Pulpers are used to process recycled waste paper; the paper is inserted into water in the machine to separate fibres, ink and other components. The remaining pulp can then be dried, refined and pressed, where it eventually becomes new recycled paper.
Reel splitters
These are cutting machines used as part of the paper recycling process. They can be powered by hydraulics or mechanics and are usually used in conjunction with a conveyor belt for the quickest, easiest process.
