With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start doing some spring cleaning. This usually refers to a deep clean of the entire house, but you should also declutter. Here’s a quick start guide to spring cleaning your home.
Step 1: Pick a room
Start with just one room. This makes the task more manageable and helps ensure you get the entire space cleaned before moving on to the next room. If the entire idea seems daunting to you, start with the rooms that will have the most impact in a short space of time. For example, the bathroom often feels like it needs the biggest clean, but it is a small space so can be done rapidly and clearing away the clutter will make the world of difference.
Step 2: Sort everything
Set up three boxes or make three piles. One of these is for items to keep, one for rubbish, and the other to get rid of. Now you can move through the room, emptying drawers, cupboards, closets, etc. and sorting everything into one of the three piles. Depending on the room, you could be done this step rather rapidly.
If anything is broken or ruined, don’t save it. Just put it in the rubbish pile and get it out of the house.
Step 3: Eliminate the rubbish
Once you have the rubbish separated out in each room, put it into bags and get rid of it quickly. This eliminates the possibility of going back through to pull out items that you feel could be useful “if only.”
If you have more than a couple of bags of rubbish, you should consider skip hire, so you can eliminate everything in one go. This is a particularly good idea if you have plans to clear out the garden, as well. Skips come in many sizes, so you can be sure there’s room for everything.
Step 4: Clean everything
The next step is to clean everything, from top to bottom. Wash walls, wipe down shelves, etc. While everything is in a box, this is the perfect time to get all your cleaning in. Pull furniture out from the wall and clean behind them. You can even wash, dry, and wax the floor if you have hardwood or tile floors.
Step 5: Put things away
Once you have finished cleaning the house, begin to put everything back. At this point, it’s important to note that every item in your home should have its own place. If it belongs somewhere, it will be easier to remember to put an item away. Anything that didn’t have a place of its own previously should be assigned one.
This is also when anything that is to be donated should be taken out of the home. You can either call for pickup or take it somewhere to donate.
Now you should have a clean, clutter-free house, ready for the warmer weather when no one really wants to clean.
