Repurposing at its Finest: Alternative Uses for a Skip

Updated: Oct 1

Here at Cherry Hill Waste, we’re all about sustainable waste management. Typically, this involves the use of skips, whereby we will separate the rubbish in the skips we collect in order to dispose of it responsibly. This includes recycling materials where possible in order to give them a new life and purpose.

On the theme of repurposing, how, then, can skips be repurposed at the end of their lifecycle? Keep reading as we discuss some examples of inventive and alternative examples of a skip.

Skate Ramp

Skips are a unique shape, one that is very well-thought-out and convenient for their traditional use. However, this shape is also ideal for another use: skateboarding. Many skateboarders practise their skills on skate ramps, however this does require them to have access to a skate park.

If you’re an avid skater, then you’ll be glad to know that you could repurpose a skip to create your very own mini skate ramp. You’d simply need to put special smooth flooring down and ensure this is fitted to match the overall curve of the skip, allowing for a smooth skate.

Mini Pool

Creating a domestic pool to have in your garden can be an expensive affair, one that also requires ample space. An alternative and cheaper option? A skip!

That’s right, a 12 yard skip is the perfect size for creating your own makeshift swimming pool. Whether you set it above ground or excavate some earth to set into the ground, skips are the perfect size and shape for filling with water, offering you an economical and environmentally conscious (since you’d be repurposing rather than using raw materials) way to relax in your very own pool during the summer heat.

Tiny House

With a bit of light DIY construction work, you could easily create your own little tiny home using a skip. Ideal for creating a little reading nook or mini garden hideaway, you simply need to open one end of the skip and add a frame and roof to the open top.

This can then be decorated however matches your interior design tastes, creating the perfect personalised little hideout.

Plant Pot

Most people associate plant pots with plants of a smaller scale, but what about one giant plant pot - and what would you put in it? Well, a tree of course!

If you don’t have a large garden space or have any soil in your garden, but would love to have your very own tree, such as an apple tree or cherry blossom tree, then a skip provides the perfect base to house one. Their size offers a solid foundation and enough space to hold the amount of soil needed for a tree to effectively spread its roots and establish itself, allowing it to flourish.
